Volts to Watts when Amps are known
Formula: P = VI
where
P = Power in watts
V = Voltage in volts
I = Current in Amps
Example: Find the watts consumed by a circuit when 10 V source connects across it cause 20 mA current to flow through it.
Solution: P = VI = 10 V * (20/1000) A
= 0.2 watts
Volts to Watts When Ohms are known
Formula: P = V2/R
P = Power in watts
V = Voltage in volts
R = Resistance in ohms
Example: Find the power consumed by a 33 ohm circuit when 12 volts are applied across it.
Solution: P = V2/R = (12)2/ 33 ohm = 4.36 watts
